Reviews
I have been coming to and ordering takeout from Red Koi for about a year now, and I realized after another awesome experience last week that I should finally write a review for my go-to sushi and Thai restaurant in Coral Gables! When I come, I like to sit upstairs in the lounge so I can have a perpetual Happy Hour vibe, and the bartender Navit never disappoints. He's super sweet, makes the best drinks (no super intense rationing of liquor here), and the fact that he is a total cutie doesn't hurt either. See the pic of the lemon-lychee martini he made me last week after I asked him to make me something unique! As far as food goes, I am a true RAW sushi and sashimi lover - the less cooked the roll, the better! With that said, I usually get the Sashimi Sampler or the Tuna Tataki as an appetizer. The past few times I've come here, I realized the owners have been getting some different types of fish based off availability, and WOW have they been fresh and amazing! The salmon sashimi is always my favorite, but lately, they have had this buttery white fish that is INCREDIBLE. I could eat a whole plate of it alone if they let me. On their sushi roll menu, you can't go wrong with the Carlito's Way Roll, Beauty Roll, or Sweet Tuna Roll. Even though I'm usually not a huge fan of fried rolls, their Lobster Roll is also SUPER FIRE. The lobster is always fresh and perfectly fried. If you're not in the mood for sushi -- their Thai food is also seriously amazing. My favorite is the Shrimp Massaman Curry. Who would have thought avocado in curry would be good?? Their duck pad thai is also to die for. Before writing this review, I read through a few previous reviews talking about an inspection and less-than-fresh food, and I got curious, so I looked them up on the public Dade County inspection site, and they were JUST inspected in December 2019 with no problem. Not sure what those reviews are talking about because I have truly never had a bad experience here. LOVE LOVE LOVE RED KOI! I can't wait to see what else they put on their menu in 2020!!
Oh Red Koi! What have they done to you? What was once a lovely little romantic spot on the Mile with dim lighting and hidden behind strategically placed hedges is now, well now it's just NOT. The hedges are gone & the lighting is fluorescent & WAY TOO bright. We walked in on a Tuesday nite & the hostess could not have looked more annoyed and disinterested if she tried. Lucky for us a FABULOUS waiter named Sebastian swooped in & made everything better. He really was an absolute pleasure! Additionally, the manager/owner(?), Jose very graciously accepted a coupon for a free bottle of champagne that had been given to me by the previous owner who no longer worked there. Very nice of him as he was under no obligation to honor it. Lychee Mojitos are amazing as is the Caribbean Roll. Good to know not everything has changed. Now if we could only get those hedges & mood lighting back!
As my Yelp wife pointed out, I've been on an Asian restaurant bender lately. Between seeking variety, good allergy drugs and appeasing the culinary tastes of another frienddate, I found myself at Red Koi this past Friday. Wandering in toward the end of Gables art walk (and after marathon workdays), we were able to get a table without having reservations. Side note, our first table was a little flimsy and unstable. Without us saying anything, our waiter offered to move us and take care of it smoothly. Much appreciated! Our gyoza was steamed perfectly, and the soy sauce gave the pork great flavor. Next for me was their chicken teriyaki dish - a generous helping of plain grilled chicken on a bed of greens and good helping of carrots. With the sweet teriyaki sauce with sesame seeds, it was perfect for those who prefer more sauce than others. The sticky rice was just rice and gave me more practice with chopsticks. My frienddate ordered a "Carlitos Way" roll, which in addition to fish stuff had sweet plantains, avocado and cream cheese. It looked interesting but I passed on it. To start the weekend right, we shared a bottle of Burgans Albarino. Mellow with some hints of apple and earth, it went great with our dinner and our delicious dessert. What was the dessert? Well their take on a pastelito, the "Wontonamera". This was a fried wonton filled with cream cheese and guava and complimented with a sweet & sour-ish plum dipping sauce. Very original sauce and very tasty. We'd definitely come back!
Best Tai\Sushi place so far that I know! What makes it even better I work in the area! Service is exceptional these guys (Lei & Peach) are awesome & on point! They're 2nd floor is reserved for special parties if you want to have a private event. Prices are truly reasonable. Thanks George (Mngr of the restaurant) for not only your hospitality but for also running this place smoothly.
Red Koi is consistently one of our favorite places for sushi in Miami. Their no-frills atmosphere and delicious yet affordable sushi always seems to bring us back. Time and time again we have great service and yummy rolls. I do think that sitting outdoors is a totally different experience than indoors. Indoors always seems to be loud and a bit too much for me, but outdoors the vibe is a lot more relaxing, plus you have great views of Miracle Mile.
